位于云南省东北部，与贵州、四川两省接壤，地势南高北低，最低海拔267米，最高海拔4040米，总面积23021平方公里。昭通历史上曾是云南通向川黔两省的重要门户，是中原文化进入云南的重要通道，为我国著名的“南丝绸之路”的要冲，素有“锁钥南滇，咽喉西蜀”之称。离昆明仅有四个小时的车程，全程高速公路。昭通地区历史悠久，早在新石器时代就有原始人在这儿繁衍生息，至西汉时更是创造了灿烂的朱提文化，它介于巴蜀文化与夜郎文化、滇文化的交汇点，又受中原文化影响，因而具有鲜明的个性特点及其区域特色，留下了许多名胜古迹。昭通地区辖1市10县，由于受金沙江、牛栏江等江河的纵横切割，境内悬崖峭壁耸立，山箐深邃，气候多样。江边河谷属热带、亚热带，高山属冷凉高寒带，俗有 “一山分四季，十里不同天”之称。 昭通的旅游景点，目前以大关黄连河风景区得知名度为高。民族风情方面，苗族花山节最为热闹。
